The Fellowship of the Ring Part-1 Review – Is It Still Worth Watching?

I first watched The Fellowship of the Ring years ago, back when the Lord of the Rings trilogy was still fresh, and everyone was talking about it. I decided to rewatch it this week, curious if it would still feel as magical asit did back then. To my surprise, it holds up incredibly well. Here’s my honest review of the first part of this legendary series.

The Story

The film begins in the peaceful Shire, where the hobbits live a quiet, simple life. Everything changes when Bilbo Baggins, under the insistence of Gandalf the Grey, passes the One Ring to his nephew Frodo. This ring is no ordinary piece of jewelry. It carries a dark history and a terrible burden that threatens to corrupt anyone who holds it. Frodo, a humble hobbit with no desire for adventure, is suddenly thrust into a mission that will determine the fate of all Middle-earth.

From the Shire to the elven city of Rivendell, and eventually toward the dark lands of Mordor, the journey is vast and full of danger. A fellowship is formed nine companions representing different races, all united to protect Frodo and destroy the ring. What makes the story so compelling is that this is just the beginning. Everything in this film is laying the groundwork for something much bigger.

What I Loved

First, let’s talk about the visuals. For a movie released in 2001, the cinematography is breathtaking. The sweeping shots of New Zealand’s mountains, rivers, and forests make you believe Middle-earth is a real place. Combined with Howard Shore’s unforgettable soundtrack, the film creates an atmosphere that pulls you in completely.

The characters are what truly make this film special. Frodo, played brilliantly by Elijah Wood, carries the weight of the ring with a quiet strength. And then there’s Sam the loyal, sincere friend who refuses to leave Frodo’s side no matter how dangerous things get. Their bond is the heart of the movie. You feel it in every scene they share.

I also loved the supporting cast. Gandalf brings wisdom and power, Aragorn is the mysterious protector with a hidden past, and Legolas and Gimli offer moments of tension and humor. Even the villains feel real. The Ringwraiths are genuinely terrifying, and the presence of Sauron looms over everything.

What Could Be Better

If I’m being honest, the pacing can feel slow in certain parts. The film takes its time introducing characters and building the world, which is necessary but might test the patience of viewers who are used to fast-paced modern blockbusters. Some conversations run longer than needed. That said, by the final hour, the film grips you and doesn’t let go.

Also, the film ends on a cliffhanger. You’ll definitely want to have The Two Towers ready to watch right after.

Who Should Watch This

Anyone who enjoys fantasy, epic adventures, or well-written characters with real emotional depth. You don’t have to be a hardcore fantasy fan to appreciate this film. If you like stories about friendship, courage, and fighting against impossible odds, this is a must-watch.

It’s also a perfect starting point for anyone new to the Lord of the Rings series. The film does a great job of introducing the world without overwhelming you.

Final Verdict

I give The Fellowship of the Ring a solid 7 out of 10. It’s a strong, beautifully crafted setup for the trilogy. The character introductions are memorable, the world is stunning, and the emotional core is real. My only minor complaints are the pacing and the cliffhanger ending. I’m excited to continue rewatching the rest of the series.

Where to Watch

The Fellowship of the Ring is currently available on Netflix. I just rewatched it there yesterday, and the streaming quality was excellent.
